Research on stock exchange markets is essential to stock market investors as it offers sensitivities to risk management. This research investigates the patterns of the volatility of stock market prices in ten African stock markets. We estimated the dynamic GARCH model of Engle using the method of maximum likelihood estimation. Daily time series from January 1, 2021 to December 30, 2022, were obtained from African Stock (Securities) Exchange database. The findings established the existence of a normally distributed Senegalese stock market as against time-varying volatility of stock prices in Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo, Niger Republic, Benin Republic, Ivory Coast, and Gambian. Hence, the likelihood that an asset or stock is being overpriced (overvalued) or underpriced (undervalued) in the Senegal stock market is low. It is therefore easier for stock traders and investors in Senegal to pick entry and exit points. Unfortunately, this cannot be said of the investors in stock markets of other countries. In effect, the closing price of a stock is most often heavily deviated with significant outliers. This further infers that variations of stock prices in these markets are very wide, heavy, and unpredicted. Hence, it is a case of the volatility of volatilities.

The objective of this research was to investigate the effects caused by the announcement of mergers of SBI and its associate banks i.e. State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur (SBBJ), State Bank of Hyderabad (SBH), State Bank of Mysore (SBM), State Bank of Patiala (SBP) and State Bank of Travan-core (SBT) with State Bank of India on the volatility of the return of SBI stock during the event window of 300 days. In order to achieve the proposed objective, this study applied Generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (Garch) class model to the return series to model their volatility because it is considered an important tool for time series data analysis. Our results confirmed the impact of the announcement of Merger on volatility. The results suggest that merger announcement was expected to cause a reaction in the returns, which is related to higher abnormal return in lesser time through merger announcement for investors.

The study is conducted to examine the impact of real effective exchange rate volatility on the trade balance in Vietnam from 2002 to 2019 by using the VAR (vector autoregression) model. The volatility of real effective exchange rate is calculated through the GARCH (1,1) model based on the quarterly data (collected by Bruegel, Europe) of the Vietnamese currency with 143 major trading partners of Vietnam. The research result shows that the current trade balance was negatively affected by the volatility of the past trade balance with the lag from 1 quarter to 4 quarters. Especially, the study finds that the volatility of real effective exchange rate with the lag of 2 reduced the trade balance in Vietnam. This is the particularity of Vietnam – a country pursuing a floating exchange rate policy under the control of the government.

This paper was conducted to examine the relationship between dividend policy and share price volatility of companies listed on Hochiminh Stock Exchange (HOSE) in Vietnam. Data set used in this research was compiled from financial statements of 260 listed firms on HOSE from 2009 to 2018. Three statistical approaches employed to address econometrics issues as well as to improve the accuracy of the regression coefficients like fixed effects model (FEM), random effects model (REM) and general method of movement (GMM). Based on the results from GMM, the association between share price volatility and dividend yield, dividend payout ratio has been explored. The findings show a positive relationship between dividend yield and stock price volatilities and a negative relationship between dividend payout ratio and stock price volatility. In addition, it is found that a firm’s growth rate, leverage and earnings volatility had positive influences on share price volatility while firm’s size had negative effect on share price volatility.

During the past few months, there has been a steady downside trend on oil price. From summer, 2015 to winter, 2016, the oil price has declined to the $20 range. Its rate of decline is amazing, having lost $10, one third of its value, in just one month. This paper presents a survey on recently published studies on relationship between oil price and stock market. The study covers several studies on the effects of oil price on China, India, Lebanon, United States and some other G7 stock markets. We also review the effects of oil price volatility on stock market. The results of most studies have indicated some strong relationships between oil price volatility and stock market return.
